Engineering and Street Operations is part of the Highway Division and oversees the design, installation, and maintenance of City infrastructure, from managing over-traffic signals and 9,000 street lights and performing street-sweeping of over 400 miles of streets to removing snow from over 650 miles of streets and sidewalks. Additional activities include keeping stormwater flowing through 10,000 catch basins and 200 miles of pipe (in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Division), issuing permits to developers for work that affects the City’s right-of-way areas, and removing graffiti from public property. The Engineering and Streets Operations sections of the Highway Division are responsible for continually repairing and improving the City’s roadways and sidewalks.
